PlayStation Vue

2013—2014

Playstation Vue was Sony's streaming live television service, available on iPad and iPhone, PlayStation consoles, and set-top streaming boxes. Odopod worked with Sony from very early in the development of the product and defined both the iOS and PlayStation experiences.

We began with the UX architecture of a native iPad app for Vue, then our design team (consisting of myself and a senior art director) built out the iOS-native experience. This was a unique challenge for me as a young designer, and taught me an enormous amount about considerations for digital media platforms, live television broadcast needs, and native app design.

Sony was so satisfied with our work that they returned to Odopod to design the PlayStation-native product that would ship to consumers. I was retained from the original team to adapt our architecture and patterns to the 10-foot UI for televisions, and I designed many parts of the experience, including Search & Browse, filtering, custom collections, and many onboarding and settings screens.

Vue launched with the PlayStation 4, and was later adapted by Sony’s in-house team to many other TV platforms. It was critically acclaimed among the new crop of streaming TV services, including my favorite quote from Chris Welch of The Verge:

It’s unreal how good Vue’s UI is. How did this come from Sony? How livid and jealous is Comcast?
