Genentech 40th Anniversary

2016

Genentech reached their 40th anniversary in 2016 and they needed to share their story. For each of their 40 years, they would publish a Defining Moment from their history — an article, a video, an interview, a photo essay — to celebrate all that made Genentech the company they are today.

Working closely with their content team, Odopod built a robust new publishing platform for Genentech, giving them the resources to showcase their history, and setting them up with the tools for a future of rich media publishing at gene.com.

I was part of a small visual design team tasked with building the design system for this platform. Early in the project, I built one of the design concepts for the platform, a direction that included the visual style, content architecture, and interaction model for the collection. We then merged multiple design directions into the final language. I shaped a set of responsive modules for the platform, and I helped establish a responsive style guide for the design system.

Explorations

We began by creating explorations in a few distinct styles to establish the look and feel of the final platform. I chose a highly graphic, monotone style using a bright blue from the Genentech brand palette.

Final Design

The final design included a landing page with story cards, a navigation system that would track a reader’s progress, and responsive layout templates for articles, videos, photo galleries, and recordings.
